Fifth Annual Dutch Oven Gathering

If you have been around here long, you know that every summer we invite family and friends to a dutch oven cook off.

Saturday was the date chosen this year and as usual we enjoyed lots of fun and good eating.

A dutch oven is a cast iron pot with three legs and a lipped lid. Coals are placed beneath the pot and on the lid to cook the food. Ed stacked all four of his dutch ovens on top of each other so the coals were heating the bottom of one pot and the top of another.

As usual, the variety of food cooked in the pots was amazing.

Stromboli

Baked Potato Casserole

Chili

Rhubarb Coffee Cake

And much more!

We all voted on our favorite and my brother Eric won with his Toll House Pie.

It was baked perfectly and oh so yummy!

Looking forward to next year!

  2. Ahem, I want to be invited next year... this looks so good and such fun. Did you have other dishes conventionally cooked to round out the meal? So glad you all had a good time.

    1. Typically the only food not cooked in a dutch oven is salad and watermelon!

  9. This is my favorite post!!! I can't believe I have read three years now!? I am amazed how time flies! I would love if your family published a cookbook!! Maybe an e-book! I'd buy it, even though I've never cooked from a Dutch oven in my life! All of the food looks absolutely delicious each year! Thanks for sharing!

  13. Ok, so this blog made me hungry....like many of your posts do.
Is there a prize given to the winner? Are you keeping a log of all the entries and recipes etc so you can make a book about this? Part of your family history, ya know.

    1. We do always have a prize for the winner. This year it was an engraved coal shovel.

Good idea about the cookbook! But really you can use almost any favorite recipe in a dutch oven. But that toll house pie was so good, I should ask for the recipe!

  14. Gina, do the men have a favorite Dutch Oven cookbook? I'm trying to decide which one(s) to buy for my husband and thought of your post about Dutch Oven cooking. Do you have any advice?

    Thanks!

    1. I don't know if any of the men use a specific dutch oven cookbook. I think they just adapt their favorite recipe to the dutch oven. Sorry I'm no help!
